Round the Beaches

The Mavora Walkway

Day 5 page 1 Carey to Mavora Lakes Campsite

This is about 9 km, 4WD track, along North Mavora Lake, often along the firm stony lake shore itself where the inland track has been let go a little.

We're up early

and ready to go by 8. Miranda displays unsuspected housekeeping skills.

We're on the shady side of the lake but countering that is the excitement at finishing a project

and we head out down the valley

The lake is still and it's one of those lovely quiet mornings with just our feet on the gravel road and the occasional call of a bush falcon above us.

There's an occasional small hill to stretch us a little once we're warmed up and we settle to an easy stride.

We begin once more to pay attention to the immediate surroundings - some interesting lichen growths on roadside rocks

We encounter a couple of southern men straight out of a Speights beer ad, on their way down to a private hut beyond Boundary.

It's pleasant walking, with enough cloud to take the bite out of the sun

and some impressive rock formations

We hit the bush and the track heads out onto the lake shore.

Times like this I'd really like a bit more geology under my belt

We cruise on up the lake shore

, and head back into the bush for the final few hundred metres.

and we're there.

We pull out some tucker for lunch, then I head up the ranger's caravan to collect the van from where Carol left it. Up ahead the weather looks wonderful.

All aboard and off to a campground in Kingston for the night for a major laundry and shower and van re-orientation and a re-charging of camera batteries. Migraine aside, it's been a pretty awesome walk, and we have a number of new skills and some extra confidence.

From Kingston we head around to Kinloch to knock off the last leg of the Greenstone Track, and take in Lake Rere on the way back.
